DAY BY DAY
Explore the complete day-by-day itinerary for Timkat in Gondar, the Lalibela churches, Lake Tana monasteries and Addis Ababa, including meals and proposed hotels.
Festival timing matters. The programme depends on an early Gondar flight on 18 January. MUKA will confirm flight arrangements and any necessary timing adjustments in writing before booking.
Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, where the MUKA Ethiopia Tours team welcomes the group and provides a private transfer to Capital Hotel & Spa. Mulugeta Demssie introduces the Ethiopia Timkat tour and allows time to settle in; early room access remains subject to availability.
As arrival time permits, visit Holy Trinity Cathedral to explore Ethiopian Orthodox architecture, imperial history and religious art. Continue to the National Museum and Entoto Maryam Church for wider historical context and panoramic views of Addis Ababa. A visit missed today can move to Day 8.
During the welcome dinner, learn about Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Christianity, respectful church etiquette and the spiritual meaning of Timkat and pilgrimage. Prepare a light day bag for the early flight to Gondar.
Spiritual theme: Welcome, orientation and an introduction to Ethiopia’s living Christian faith.
Stay and meals
Capital Hotel & Spa · Lunch and dinner, subject to arrival time
Take the first practical morning flight from Addis Ababa to Gondar after an early or packed breakfast. Meet a specialist Gondar guide and visit the UNESCO-listed Fasil Ghebbi Royal Enclosure and Debre Birhan Selassie Church as flight timing permits.
After an early lunch, continue to a suitable viewing area for Ketera, the eve of Timkat. Watch clergy carry reverently wrapped tabots beneath colourful ceremonial umbrellas towards Fasilides’ Bath, accompanied by chanting, drums and religious dance.
The guide explains the Ark and tabot tradition while keeping the group clear of sacred processional routes. Road closures may require walking, and viewing positions cannot be guaranteed during this living religious festival. Return to Haile Resort for dinner and an early night.
Spiritual theme: The tabot, the Ark tradition and public expressions of Ethiopian Orthodox faith.
Stay and meals
Haile Resort, Gondar · Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Leave at approximately 04:15 after warm drinks and light refreshments. Travel as close as permitted to Fasilides’ Bath, then continue on foot with guides positioned to support the group and maintain a clear meeting point.
Observe the pre-dawn Timkat vigil and liturgy, followed after sunrise by the blessing of the water. Worshippers receive blessed water and some enter the pool as an expression of baptismal renewal. The ceremony is an act of worship; visitors follow all instructions from clergy, guides and local authorities.
Return to the hotel for brunch and rest. In the afternoon, follow a selected part of the joyful return processions as the tabots travel back to their churches. Later, reflect together on Epiphany, baptismal symbolism and Ethiopia’s public Christian traditions.
Activity note: Expect dense crowds and potentially four to six hours of standing or walking during the pre-dawn Timkat programme.
Stay and meals
Haile Resort, Gondar · Early refreshments, brunch/lunch and dinner
Fly from Gondar to Lalibela using the confirmed operating route. A direct service is preferred, although the published schedule may require a connection. Transfer to Sora Lodge and enjoy lunch before beginning the Lalibela church tour.
Explore the north-western group of UNESCO-listed rock-hewn churches, including Bete Medhane Alem and Bete Maryam, with their courtyards and chapels as access permits. Learn about Zagwe history, monolithic construction, the symbolic River Jordan and the churches’ continuing liturgical life.
Continue to Bete Giyorgis, the iconic cross-shaped Church of Saint George. The visit allows time for quiet observation and personal reflection. After dinner, an optional discussion considers how sacred architecture, light and passage shape the pilgrim’s experience.
Spiritual theme: Sacred architecture, pilgrimage and the symbolism of Ethiopia’s “New Jerusalem.”
Stay and meals
Sora Lodge, Lalibela · Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Where church permission and the liturgical calendar allow, interested travellers may quietly observe part of an early Ethiopian Orthodox service. After breakfast, explore Lalibela’s south-eastern churches, including Bete Amanuel, Bete Abba Libanos, Bete Gabriel-Rufael and Bete Mercurios as access permits.
After lunch, enjoy a slower period for rest, a local market or craft visit, and questions with the guide. The Lalibela churches involve uneven stone surfaces, steps, narrow passages and repeated shoe removal.
Later, visit a local family for a hands-on Ethiopian cooking experience. Learn how injera and traditional dishes are prepared, discuss Orthodox fasting food, share the meal and enjoy a coffee ceremony where appropriate. The encounter is organised around the hosts’ comfort and dignity.
Spiritual theme: Living worship, everyday faith and Ethiopian hospitality.
Stay and meals
Sora Lodge, Lalibela · Breakfast, lunch and family-hosted dinner
Fly from Lalibela to Bahir Dar on the confirmed route. The sector may require a connection through Addis Ababa, so the afternoon remains flexible. Transfer to Kuriftu Resort & Spa Lake Tana for check-in and lunch as timing permits.
Explore Bahir Dar and visit Bezawit Mariam Church where access allows. The local guide introduces Lake Tana’s importance in Ethiopian Christian history, the Solomonic era and the development of its monastery tradition.
If flight time and weather permit, take a short private sunset boat trip near the Blue Nile outlet. Hippopotamus sightings are possible but cannot be guaranteed. Life jackets are required and the captain’s decision on lake conditions is final.
Spiritual theme: The Lake Tana landscape and the continuity of Ethiopian Christianity.
Stay and meals
Kuriftu Resort & Spa Lake Tana · Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Cross Lake Tana by private boat to the Zege Peninsula, then walk through a shaded coffee forest to Ura Kidane Mihret and, subject to opening conditions, Azwa Maryam or another monastery that welcomes the whole group.
Explore circular church architecture, colourful biblical paintings, processional crosses and the monastic traditions of prayer, education and manuscript preservation. The guide explains the role of the tabot and why the central sanctuary remains restricted. Sacred objects are viewed and photographed only with permission.
Enjoy lunch beside the lake or return to Bahir Dar, depending on operating arrangements and lake conditions. The afternoon offers time for rest, a gentle lakeside walk or group reflection on monastic learning and heritage stewardship.
Spiritual theme: Biblical art, monastic learning and the guardianship of sacred heritage.
Stay and meals
Kuriftu Resort & Spa Lake Tana · Breakfast, lunch and dinner
After breakfast, fly from Bahir Dar to Addis Ababa. Day rooms or luggage storage will be arranged according to the confirmed international departure schedule.
Choose final church or museum visits, Ethiopian art and handicraft shopping, or a carefully guided market experience. Depending on the group’s interests, two pre-arranged subgroups may follow separate programmes. A visit deferred from Day 1 can be included today.
Gather for a cultural farewell dinner featuring Ethiopian food and live regional music. Mulugeta leads a final reflection on the group’s experience of Timkat and Ethiopia’s living Christian heritage. Transfer to Bole International Airport approximately three hours before the international flight. MUKA can arrange international flights separately.
Spiritual theme: Final encounters, shared reflection and departure.

Domestic flights, seven hotel nights, scheduled meals, private transport, entrance fees, local guides and leadership by Mulugeta Demssie are included as specified.

Follow clergy and guides, keep processional routes clear, and request permission before photographing worshippers or sacred objects.
Yes. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are widely available, especially within Ethiopia’s Orthodox fasting tradition. All scheduled meals are included. Declare allergies and medical dietary needs in writing when booking so MUKA can confirm what hotels, restaurants and the family host can accommodate.
This remains a proposed departure subject to domestic flight and hotel availability, applicable travel advice, insurance validity and MUKA’s operational and safety assessment. Obtain written confirmation, the final payment schedule and cancellation conditions before making non-refundable arrangements.
The programme uses local guides, drivers, boat crews, hotels, restaurants, church custodians and a Lalibela family host. Entrance fees contribute to visited heritage sites, while community encounters are organised with respect for local dignity. Any church or community donations remain voluntary.
