Ethiopian Calendar & Time

The Ethiopian Calendar is one of the most fascinating cultural features you will encounter when traveling in Ethiopia. Unlike the Gregorian calendar used in most of the world, Ethiopia follows its own ancient timekeeping system, giving visitors the feeling of stepping into a different era.

Understanding the Unique Ethiopian Calendar System

Ethiopian Calendar – 13 Months of Sunshine

Ethiopia uses a calendar that is approximately seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar. While much of the world celebrates the New Year on January 1st, Ethiopian New Year (Enkutatash) falls on September 11th, or September 12th in leap years.

The Ethiopian calendar is closely related to the ancient Coptic calendar, but it is 276 years ahead of it. It consists of 13 months:

  • 12 months with 30 days each
  • 1 short month (Pagume) with five days, or six days in a leap year

This unique structure is why Ethiopians proudly say they enjoy “13 months of sunshine.” When the world welcomed the new millennium in 2000, Ethiopia officially entered the year 2000 in September 2007.

In daily life, both the Ethiopian Calendar and the Gregorian calendar are commonly used side by side, especially in tourism, government offices, and international communication.

And as Ethiopians like to joke, when you visit the country, you are instantly seven years younger.

Ethiopian Calendar & Time

Ethiopian Time – How Time Is Measured in Ethiopia

In addition to its calendar, Ethiopia also follows a distinct time-telling system. Because the country lies close to the equator, daylight and nighttime are almost equal throughout the year.

The Ethiopian day is divided into:

  • 12 hours of daytime
  • 12 hours of nighttime

The day begins at sunrise, which is around 6:00 a.m. international time. In Ethiopian time, this is considered 12:00 o’clock. For example:

  • 7:00 a.m. international time = 1:00 Ethiopian time
  • 6:00 p.m. international time = 12:00 Ethiopian time

This system can sometimes cause confusion for visitors, so during your Ethiopia trip, it’s always best to confirm whether a time is given in local Ethiopian time or international time.

Time Difference When Traveling to Ethiopia

Ethiopia follows East Africa Time (EAT), which is:

  • UTC +3 hours
  • Two hours ahead of Central European Time (CET)
  • One hour ahead of Europe during winter time

Understanding both the Ethiopian Calendar and Ethiopian time system will make your journey smoother and help you connect more deeply with local life.
