We are MUKA Ethiopia Tours, a specialist tour operator based in Addis Ababa, offering authentic, private and small group tours across Ethiopia. Founded by experienced Ethiopian travel professionals with strong international connections, MUKA designs carefully crafted journeys that connect travellers with Ethiopia’s ancient history, living cultures, dramatic landscapes and warm local communities. From the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and the castles of Gondar to the Omo Valley, Danakil Depression, Simien Mountains and Addis Ababa, every tour is planned with local knowledge, flexibility and personal attention.
At MUKA Ethiopia Tours, we believe travel should be meaningful, responsible and deeply connected to the people and places visited. Our team works with trusted local guides, drivers, hotels and community partners to create safe, comfortable and memorable travel experiences for individuals, families, church groups, student groups, photographers and adventure travellers. Whether you are looking for a tailor-made Ethiopia trip, a private cultural tour, a small group adventure or a special interest journey, MUKA is here to help you discover Ethiopia with confidence, care and genuine local insight.
MUKA Ethiopia Tours was founded by Mulugeta Demssie, an Ethiopian tourism professional with nearly two decades of experience in the travel and tourism sector. His professional background combines practical tour operation, academic study, university teaching, tourism research and destination development consulting. This broad experience gives MUKA a strong foundation in both professional travel planning and responsible destination management.
Mulugeta’s academic and professional journey has taken him to several countries, including Denmark, Slovenia, Spain, the USA and Hong Kong, where he studied tourism at Master’s and PhD levels. After gaining international exposure and learning from different tourism systems, he became even more committed to presenting Ethiopia to the world in a respectful, authentic and professional way.
His vision was simple: to create an Ethiopia-based tour company that offers international standards of service while remaining deeply connected to local people, local knowledge and local values.
MUKA’s journey began in Europe. In 2016, MUKA Travel GmbH was established in Germany as a small, ethical tour operation focused on inspiring travellers to visit Ethiopia with curiosity, respect and cultural sensitivity. Two years later, in 2018, MUKA Ethiopia Tours was founded in Addis Ababa to coordinate tours directly from the ground and provide guests with reliable local support throughout their journey.
Today, MUKA Ethiopia Tours operates from Addis Ababa and works closely with a trusted network of guides, drivers, hotels, community hosts and local partners across the country. This allows us to design tours based on real travel conditions, up-to-date local knowledge and genuine personal relationships.
Being based in Ethiopia gives us a major advantage. We do not simply sell Ethiopia from a distance; we live here, travel here, work here and understand the country from within. This helps us create realistic itineraries, respond quickly to changing conditions and provide guests with direct support before, during and after their trip.
MUKA Ethiopia Tours is supported by a committed team of local guides, experienced drivers, tour operators, community hosts and long-standing partners across Ethiopia. From our Addis Ababa office to Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar, Axum, Gheralta, Danakil, Omo Valley and other destinations, every member of our network plays an important role in creating authentic Ethiopia tours.
Our work is built on trust, respect and shared responsibility. We choose our guides and partners not only for their knowledge, but also for their professionalism, hospitality, flexibility and respect for local communities. This ensures that each MUKA journey is well organised, culturally sensitive and meaningful.
Abraham Zeleke is MUKA Ethiopia Tours’ representative in Europe, based in Trier, Germany. With his strong connection to both Ethiopia and Germany, Abraham supports our European communication, customer service and travel partnerships. Together with his wife Rute, he is also connected to Ethiopian hospitality in Germany, helping introduce Ethiopian culture, food and travel experiences to European guests. Through Abraham’s support, MUKA maintains close contact with travellers, partners and clients in Europe, especially those looking for reliable Ethiopia tours with direct local coordination in Addis Ababa.
Nardos Bekele supports the planning and coordination of MUKA Ethiopia Tours’ travel programmes in Ethiopia. Her role includes assisting with itinerary preparation, communication with local service providers, hotel coordination, transport arrangements and guest support. With a strong understanding of Ethiopia’s major travel routes and guest expectations, Nardos helps ensure that each private Ethiopia tour, small group journey or customised itinerary runs smoothly from arrival to departure.
Yared Gudeta is one of MUKA’s specialist guides, bringing strong destination knowledge, local storytelling and practical guiding experience to our tours. He helps travellers understand Ethiopia beyond the surface by explaining history, culture, landscapes, traditions and everyday life in a clear and engaging way. His guiding approach is warm, informative and flexible, making him especially valuable for guests who want meaningful cultural encounters and deeper interpretation during their Ethiopia trip.
Belaya Mengesha is a specialist guide for Ethiopia’s historic northern route, particularly Lalibela, Bahir Dar, Lake Tana, Axum and Christian heritage sites. Born and raised in Lalibela, he has deep personal knowledge of Ethiopia’s rock-hewn churches, Orthodox Christian traditions, monastic culture and pilgrimage routes. He is especially suited for travellers interested in Lalibela tours, Christian pilgrimage in Ethiopia, church history, Ethiopian Orthodox traditions and cultural heritage journeys through northern Ethiopia.
Abera Getachew is MUKA’s specialist for Gondar and the Simien Mountains area. His local knowledge supports travellers exploring the castles of Gondar, Debre Birhan Selassie Church, the Royal Enclosure, traditional highland communities and the dramatic landscapes of Simien Mountains National Park. Abera’s experience is especially valuable for guests combining Ethiopia’s historic route with trekking, wildlife viewing, landscape photography and cultural encounters in the northern highlands.
Habtom is MUKA’s specialist for the Gheralta rock churches, Tigray highlands and Danakil Afar region. His knowledge of remote landscapes, local logistics and regional travel conditions helps guests experience some of Ethiopia’s most extraordinary adventure destinations, including Gheralta, Abune Yemata Guh, the Danakil Depression, Dallol and Erta Ale Volcano. These destinations require careful planning, reliable local support and strong field experience. Habtom’s role is therefore essential for adventure travellers, photographers and guests seeking remote Ethiopia tours.
At MUKA Ethiopia Tours, we believe tourism should create positive connections between travellers and host communities. Our philosophy is rooted in respect, fairness, cultural exchange and responsible travel. We want every guest to enjoy Ethiopia’s beauty and diversity while also contributing to local livelihoods and protecting the country’s cultural and natural heritage.
We aim to ensure that every private Ethiopia tour, small group tour or tailor-made Ethiopia trip supports positive social, cultural and environmental impact.
Travelling in Ethiopia is deeply rewarding, but it also requires careful planning, local experience and reliable coordination. Ethiopia is a country of great diversity, where routes, seasons, local conditions and cultural expectations vary from region to region. As a local tour operator based in Addis Ababa, MUKA Ethiopia Tours helps travellers explore the country with confidence and clarity.
